Nick Saethre

Staff Software Engineer

The codebase is real, the traffic is real, the AI loop closes or breaks tonight — that's the job.

What's the biggest shift in how you work over the last year?

I ship microservices from spec to production in under two hours now. That's not a capability I had twelve months ago. Claude Code handles the boilerplate; I own the architecture decisions and the edge cases the model misses. The velocity is real, but so is the judgment required to direct it.

Walk me through a problem you solved using AI that you couldn't have tackled the same way before.

We had a latency issue in our merchant pipeline that would have taken three days to diagnose with traditional tooling. I ran an agentic analysis loop — fed logs, instrumentation traces, and service graphs to a Claude session — and it surfaced the root cause in forty minutes. The fix took two more hours. Done before end of day.

What would you tell someone considering joining Groupon right now?

The chaos is real. The legacy is real. But if you want to be inside an AI transformation while it's happening — writing the playbook, not reading it afterward — this is where that happens. We're not piloting AI. We're running the company on it.
